Curtis Granderson to the New York Yankees Just Leaves Me Speechless

You know, for years I've respected Jim Hendry. Oh sure, i thought he was overmatched, and in over his head at times. But he worked tirelessly to improve the team, supported his manager, turned Chicago into a preferred free agent destination again, and did get around eventually to vastly improving the Cubs farm system. While he certainly wasn't of the Schuerholz or Jocketty caliber, I felt like he was better than average, and improving. Somewhere along the line though, I feel like he lost his way, or perhaps I just ...

Curtis Granderson to Yankees: Trade Depletes Farm, Handcuffs Halladay Talks

Curtis Granderson, an All-Star center fielder acquired at the Indianapolis Winter Meetings, improves the Yankees’ 25-man roster immediately. Making him a top priority this offseason, however, was a mistake.   Two-time 20 game winner Roy Halladay is capable of swinging the balance of power in the AL by himself. Granderson, though a valuable player, is not.   A rotation of CC Sabathia, Halladay, AJ Burnett, Andy Pettitte, and Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes would make the Yankees an indestructible force. With Halladay still available, the door is open for the Red Sox and Angels ...

Does Curtis Granderson Spell The End For Johnny Damon in Pinstripes?

With rumors swirling throughout the baseball world at this year's Winter Meetings, the biggest move so far has been the three team trade between the Yankees, Tigers, and Diamondbacks. It is rumored the Yankees will receive Curtis Granderson, the Tigers will receive Max Scherzer, Daniel Schlereth, Phil Coke, and Austin Jackson, and the Diamondbacks would receive Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy.  The trade featured two big time prospects. Jackson was the Yankees' top minor league prospect, ranked the 39th best prospect in all the land by Baseball America. Over the past year or ...

Curtis Granderson to New York Yankees: Comparing him to Cabrera and Damon

The news that the New York Yankees are near completing a deal for Detroit’s Curtis Granderson caught a lot of Yankee fans by surprise.    Casual fans may know little about Granderson. Most talk of the deal has focused on the fact that Granderson is an All-Star center fielder.   But former Tigers 1st base coach Andy Van Slyke has seen Granderson up close. A former major league center field himself, Van Slyke doesn't think much of Granderson's defense.   While Van Slyke praised Granderson highly as a person and a teammate—if he had a ...

New York Yankees Re-Sign Andy Pettitte

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post , the New York Yankees have re-signed LHP Andy Pettitte to a one-year, $11.75 million contract. The $11.75 million for one-year is a nice increase in base salary for Pettitte. If you remember, Pettitte signed an incentive laden deal last winter with a base of $5.5 million. Pettitte earned a total of $10.5 million in 2009, so he got a slight raise in 2010. After having a disappointing 2008 season where he went 14-14 with a 4.58 ERA and gave up a career high ...

MLB Winter Meetings: Day Three Surprises

Any time I hear the phrase "surprise team" during the winter meetings, I am afraid...very afraid. Especially since there is a rumored "surprise team" that is involved with trade talks between the Chicago Cubs for Milton Bradley. Back in September, I explored the possibility of bringing Bradley to Toronto , but overall it was too high a risk for not enough reward in return. Milton Bradley does not fit in the direction of the future of the Blue Jays, as was tweeted by Jordan Bastian : "Jays want young controllable ...

A Look at a Few Possibilities for the Yankees in the Rule 5 Draft

The Yankees unloaded Brian Bruney to the Nationals and received a player to be named later in the deal that happened to be whomever the Nationals take with their first overall pick in the Rule 5 draft. The draft takes place at the winter meetings tomorrow. It is quite possible that the Yankees trade this pick , since they don't usually take part in the Rule 5. I would still like to see the Yankees hold onto it and try to make something of it. Cashman definitely has a few people in mind, ...

Yankees May Look To Get John Lackey, Not Roy Halladay, After Three-Team Trade

By now, everyone has heard that the Yankees made a three-way deal with the Tigers and Diamondbacks to acquire centerfielder Curtis Granderson for 2010. This deal almost ensures the Yankees have found their new permanent fixture in centerfield, and it could mean Melky Cabrera might be on the trading block now. With this trade, you also have to wonder if the Yankees will be big players for Roy Halladay like they were rumored to be. The Yankees today dealt one of their best prospects in outfielder Austin Jackson, plus major league-ready pitchers in ...

Analyzing the New York Yankees’ Most Recent Addition, Curtis Granderson

As I discussed right after the trade went down, the Yankees have acquired Curtis Granderson from the Tigers. Granderson's past few seasons have been very interesting. He peaked in 2007 with a 7.4(!) WAR season and has since regressed to seasons of 3.8 and 3.4 WAR in '08 and '09, respectively. The no-doubt biggest concern with Granderson is his awful platoon split. Over the course of his career (619 AB), Granderson has put up a horrid line of .210/.270/.344 against lefties. Versus righties, he's hit to a much more attractive .292/.367/.528 line. ...

Will Curtis Granderson’s Arrival Mean Johnny Damon’s Departure from New York?

According to several reports published today, the Yankees are close to acquiring center fielder Curtis Granderson from the Detroit Tigers in a three-way deal with the Diamondbacks and Tigers, which involves the Yankees giving up Phil Coke, Ian Kennedy, and prized outfield prospect Austin Jackson. If this deal does indeed happen, it would be a tremendous pickup for the Yankees, as they've acquired yet another power hitter for the home run-friendly Yankee Stadium, not to mention a very good defensive center fielder.  Not only have the Yankees acquired a great ...
