Two Yankees Minor League Teams Win Titles

Last night, two Yankees minor league affiliates won championship titles: the high-A Tampa Yankees and the short season-A Staten Island Yankees. The Tampa Yankees rode a five-hitter by Trent Lare to capture the title. This team has been a truly great team for the Yankees minor league system this season. They have a nice mix of some of their top talents down there, and they also got some late-season additions from other teams to help them down the stretch. The Staten Island Yankees have also been very impressive this season. After starting ...

Ian Kennedy Pitches Three Strong Innings for Scranton Yankees

Ian Kennedy continued his great return from aneurysm surgery last night as he pitched three perfect innings for the Scranton Yankees. Over three innings, he allowed no hits, no walks, and stuck out six. He needed just 46 pitches to get it done and of those 28 were strikes. It was the first time Kennedy pitched as high as triple-A since April. During his four April starts, he was 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA. It is still possible—but highly unlikely—he could pitch for the Yankees this season. Most likely that’s not ...

Jorge Posada Gets His Ears in an Uproar and Almost Hurt the New York Yankees

Childish, baby like, and potentially dangerous. That is what Jorge Posada's actions were Tuesday night in the fracas that erupted at Yankee Stadium. And I thought boxing was coming to the New, New Yankee Stadium a few years from now, but not as soon as last night. Posada felt he should not be the recipient of the Toronto Blue Jays retaliation of "my hitter gets hit, so we must hit yours." Actually, that is a badge of honor to be the recipient. It means the other team values you as a player, ...

Why Joe Mauer Should Not Be The AL MVP and My Pick

I know what you're all thinking...'How can anyone make an argument against Joe Mauer not being the AL MVP?' And no, I'm not one of those people that thinks the MVP has to be from a team that goes to the playoffs either. My answer as to why is simple: Run Production. Mauer is currently on pace to have 97 RBI and 96 runs scored by the end of the season. Can you name the last non-pitcher to win AL MVP without having triple-digits in either of those categories? I doubt it. Well, ...

MLB Free Agent at the End of the Season: Hideki Matsui

As Hideki Matsui looks toward his impending free agency, he's got to feel good about things. He's proven to the baseball world once again that he is one of the premier hitters in the American League and despite all the talk of injuries, age, and decline; Matsui can still rake with the best of them and should be in line for a nice contract. How will Matsui's tremendous 2009 season translate on the free-agent market? Let's take a look: The Case for MatsuiProductive hitterWhen Matsui is healthy and able to play, ...

Brett Gardner is Dave Roberts

Give Brett Gardner credit for both Yankee wins this week. Specifically, you can credit his speed.  On Monday, he beat the Angels with his legs in the ninth inning, which is usually something the Angels do to beat the Yankees. Gardner pinch-ran for Mark Teixeira after he doubled with one out, stole third base and scored on the throw that squeaked down the left field line.  Last night, Gardner led off the bottom of the ninth with a single. He stole second on an 0-2 count to Derek Jeter and then ...

Today’s Magic Number: Gary Sheffield

Former Deadspin editor Will Leitch has come up with an admirable way to pay tribute to the former players of his favorite franchise while avoiding a jinx on their chance at a division crown. The St. Louis Cardinals hold a 9.5 game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central. With 18 games remaining in the season, that puts their magic number at 11. Rather than stating his team's daily number, Leitch substitutes the name of a former Cards player who wore that day's magic number on his uniform. I am ...

Good to the Last Pop: Francisco Cervelli Leads N.Y. Yankees to 14th Walkoff Win

It's becoming a theme in the new Yankee Stadium for opposing teams. If you don't win the game before the ninth inning, you're in deep trouble, because the Yankees will find a way to come back and beat you. On Wednesday night, it was no different. The Yankees were trailing the Blue Jays 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning and looked a little flat against the Blue Jays pitching. Alex Rodriguez got on with a base hit against Scott Downs. Up came Hideki Matsui, who is very tough against left-handed pitching. Matsui takes ...

SCL’s Fresh Take

Hey sports fans, are you ready to go?  Buckle up as I put the peddle to the metal for the all new SCL’s Fresh Take, a whole new twist on sports for you, the fan. Fight night at The Stadium!  What about the brawl in the Bronx between the Yanks and the Jays.  I can not believe Jorge Posada would take a cheap shot at a guy and jeopardize getting hurt or being suspended because of a brush back pitch.  Hey Jorge, you are a veteran and should know better.  You ...

This Week on Pied: Francisco Cervelli

On this week’s episode of the new hit TV show on the Yes Network, Pied, Francisco Cervelli was, pied, in the face. Cervelli licked the whipped cream off his face after grounding a walk-off base hit into left to give the Yankees (94-53) a 5-4 victory over the Blue Jays (66-80). It was the 14th walk-off win of the season for the Yankees, which leads all of baseball.  Quick ‘Cap: I feel like the same guys are providing the RBIs during the game, and then it’s a different guy to get the walk-off ...
