The New York Yankees Disrespected George Steinbrenner

Before inter-league play, the New York Yankees played the New York Mets in an annual exhibition game for the Mayor's Trophy. The proceeds went to charity, usually sandlot baseball. Players on both teams didn't care much about winning the game. It was, after all, merely an exhibition game, but for the fans, it was much more, especially for one Yankees' fan. George M. Steinbrenner became the principle owner of what had become New York's "other" team in 1973. ...

MLB Trade Deadline Countdown: NY Yankees Are Front Runners For Dan Haren

Baseball analyst Ken Rosenthal reported that the world champion New York Yankees are the front runners to acquire pitcher Dan Haren. Haren of the Arizona Diamondbacks has been a consistent pitcher since 2005. Last season, he had an ERA of 3.14 and picked up 14 wins. Note the fact that the D-Backs had a losing season. The Yankees have been looking for an above-average starter to fill in Andy Pettitte, who is injured, and to have an always-stockpiled starting rotation. Both organizations believe that this deal can go through, but the D-Backs are ...

MLB Trade Rumors: Arizona Wants Joba Chamberlain For Dan Haren

Despite General Manager Brian Cashman's continued claim that the Yankees do not need another starting pitcher, the team continues to pursue the top names. New York is reportedly actively pursuing Arizona Diamondbacks' starter Dan Haren. The two teams have gone as far as naming names and proposing deals. An agreement has not been made as of yet. Arizona asked for struggling reliever Joba Chamberlain, highly regarded pitching prospect Ivan Nova, and two other prospects in return for Haren. The Yankees countered with a package entirely made of ...

New York Yankees Notes: Burnett, Milestones, Swisher, and More

It was a big night for the Yankees, who sat through about an hour and a half wait through a rain delay to beat the Royals 7-1 last night. Here are some notes: AJ Burnett looked sharp as he evened his record to 8-8. He left after five innings though because of the rain delay. Jorge Posada picked up the 1,000th and 1,001st RBI of his career. Robinson Cano is now two hits away from 1,000 for his career. Alex Rodriguez is still one away from 600 home runs. ...

New York Yankees Never Really Close to Trading for Dan Haren

According to Jayson Stark of ESPN , the Yankees were never actually as close to landing the Diamondback’s ace starter Dan Haren as reporters made it sound last night. Stark reports that the Yankees rejected a deal that would have been centered around Joba Chamberlain, Ivan Nova, and two other prospects. The Yanks countered with a deal that didn’t include Joba and that appears to be where the deal fell apart. Another issue, according to Stark, was over money. Haren is guaranteed at least $29 million ($33 million including the remainder ...

“Hip, Hip, Jorge!” Congrats To Jorge Posada On His 1,000th Career RBI

On a night when it rained on Alex Rodriuez's 600th home run quest, Jorge Posada's milestone RBI stole the spotlight. After a base clearing three run double by Robinson Cano in the top of the first inning,  Posada followed with an RBI double of his own, and thus reached 1,000 RBI's in his career. With his milestone RBI tonight, Posada is now the 12th Yankee to do so, joining fellow catchers Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey, as well as long time teammate Derek Jeter. But it's not just Yankee legends that he's joining. Posada's name can now ...

MLB Trade Rumors: Dan Haren Would Fit Nicely with New York Yankees

If the New York Yankees were to land Arizona's Dan Haren, they would be getting a top pitcher to add to their already impressive group of starters. The Diamondbacks' hurler is currently having a difficult 2010, posting a 7-8 record with an ERA of 4.60.  Haren, though, is only a year removed from a fantastic season where he went 14-10 with an ERA of 3.14, and 223 strikeouts. He represents greater value than Roy Oswalt, who is due $16 million in 2011 with an option for the same amount in 2012. Haren ...

Only Alex: The Glamourus Path To 600

There is that third basemen for the New York Yankees who has a strange way of doing things. Alex Rodriguez is sitting at 599 home runs on his career. A-Rod will only be the seventh player in history to enter the realm of 600 or more career home runs. On top of that, he will become the youngest to hit 600 home runs, at the age of 34.  On July 27, A-Rod will celebrate his 35th birthday. Let's look back on a few key moments in the last eight ...

New York Yankees: Dan Haren Trade “Not That Close”

Final update of the night: Arizona president Derrick Hall has confirmed that the Yankees are one of “a few teams” it is talking to about Dan Haren. He also said there is no front runner and other clubs have made offers “of at least equal value” to the Yankees' offer. Update 10:54: Now we’re hearing that a deal is “not that close” and that other teams are still in on Haren, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports. Update 9:38: For what it’s worth (I really have no idea how reliable ...

Former New York Yankees’ Manager Ralph Houk’s Biggest Gamble

It was one of the biggest gambles in World Series history. Matty Alou was on third base with the potential tying run. Willie Mays was on second base with the potential World Series winning run. There were two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Willie McCovey was the batter with Orlando Cepeda on deck. New York Yankees' manager Ralph Houk went to the mound to talk to right-handed starter Ralph Terry. It would be Terry's choice. ...
