New York Yankees Take Commanding 2-0 Lead in ALDS

The Yankees yet again won another come-from-behind playoff game against the Minnesota Twins as they beat them 5-2 last night behind a strong performance from Andy Pettitte. Here are some highlights: The Twins had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second, but Carl Pavano couldn’t hold it. Pavano pitched six innings and allowed four runs. Pettitte needed just 88 pitches. His line: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR. The Yankees tacked on another run in the ninth when Brett Gardner scored ...

New York Yankees Got It Right In Aiming for Wild Card To Face Twins

Two games into both American League Division Series match-ups and it seems that the Yankees made the right decision by winning the Wild Card. The New York media continuously jumped on the Yankees regarding their play over the past two months. In reality, yes, they were playing horribly, but they were also not playing with a sense of urgency. The Yankees had already put the Boston Red Sox away, or at least it was the feeling at the time, and they played poorly because of it. Joe Girardi knew his ...

New York Yankees’ Dominance over Twins Continues, Take Game 1

We’ve seen this movie before haven’t we? The Minnesota Twins jump out to a lead, the New York Yankees come back, the Twins get tight, and then Mariano Rivera comes in to close the door. It’s like the movie Arlington Road (one of the more underrated movies in the last 15 years by the way). You kind of wait for the good guys to pull it out in the end, but it never happens. The Twins (the good guys in this case) can never seem to get over in the ...

2010 MLB Playoffs: Teixeira’s Performance on the Mark in ALDS Game1

I've been pretty hard on Mark Teixeira this year. This can happen when a star slugger of your favorite team also happens to be the No. 1 pick in your big-money fantasy baseball league. It's kind of like doubling down in black jack—payoff is double the pleasure, but losing hurts twice as bad as winning feels good. And there were times this season when Teixeira hurt me. Badly. You can make the argument he had the worst season of his life. Nearly all his numbers took a steep drop from 2009, including ...

Mark Teixeira and New York Yankees Need Big Night To Lead to Playoff Redemption

Many of us remember the game-winning, walk-off home run that Mark Teixeira launched in Game 2 of the 2009 ALDS against the Twins. Many more of us are having trouble forgetting the rest of the 2009 playoffs, where Teixeira was practically a no-show. He had just a .180 batting average with a .593 OPS last postseason. He capped it off with a pathetic .136 hitting performance in the World Series that left many Yankee fans thankful for Alex Rodriguez and the clutch performances of Hideki Matsui. This time around ...

New York Yankees: All About Pitching…Sometimes

Before Game 1 of the ALDS yesterday, I briefly mentioned how I thought the whole “pitching wins in the postseason” narrative is a little flawed. Clearly, pitching – starting pitching in particular – is a gigantic factor in deciding who wins. Tampa Bay certainly wishes they didn’t have to face Cliff Lee yesterday (and maybe I’m being overly reactionary, but after watching him, I’m ready for the Yankees to give him the blank check. With Gardner the Yanks don’t need another outfielder. They just need Lee. So yes, I ...

New York Yankees Notes: Mark Teixeira, A.J. Burnett, Mariano Rivera, Joe Girardi

Last night’s win over the Twins was exciting, but attention must immediately turn toward tonight’s matchup of Andy Pettitte against former Yankees disabled list mainstay Carl Pavano. Here are some notes: We found out yesterday that Mark Teixeira had a cortisone shot in his hand a couple of weeks back. Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher also had shots in September. It sounds like A.J. Burnett may serve as short relief out of the bullpen. Joe Girardi said his only restriction would be that he wouldn’t pitch back-to-back ...
